Nantucket

  • An island 26 miles south of Cape Cod.
  • Once a part of the New York colony, it was transferred to Massachusetts in 1692.
  • 14 miles long by 3-5 miles wide…About the same length as the island of Manhattan.
  • There are no bridges or tunnels to the island.
  • You can only drive no more than 45 mph.
  • There are no traffic lights, just narrow streets, stop signs and…rotaries!
  • There are 3 lighthouses on the island, Brant Point Light, Sankaty Head Light and Great Point Light.
  • The name “Nantucket” is from the native Algonquin language meaning “land far at sea.
  • Nicknamed “The Grey Lady” due to the fog that rolls across the island.
  • Both Brant Point Light and the Jetties light have fog horns that sound when it becomes foggy.
